"The drink of the gods"
Yerba mate tea is the national drink in Paraguay, southern Brazil and Argentina. Tea consists of leaves from the plant Yerba Mate. The drink containing caffeine is also called 'the drink of the gods' or 'the green gold of the Indians' due to its many health promoting properties.
Mate tea is drunk with a calabash, made from a hollowed-out pumpkin and with a special metal straw called Bombilla.
Taste
The taste can basically be described as green tea with smoked undertones.
Brewing
The optimal taste is best achieved by allowing the tea to soak for 5-10 minutes. in boiling water depending on how strong the taste one wants.
What is Yerba Mate
Yerba mate is a plant that grows in fields and plantations in much of South America. The plant contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and caffeine, which is why it has become the most popular beverage in South America. The leaves of the yerba mate plant are harvested, blanched, dried, aged and then cut into appropriate pieces before turning into tea.
